On a merely rhetorical note, this is fantastic prose. A college prof of mine once told me to try to write like Hemingway: focus on nouns and verbs -- don't try to gussy up your writing with modifiers. Preus does this very effectively, which is one of the reasons his writing is so compelling. That, and the Holy Spirit ;) How beautiful it is to see truth combined with erudition.
